Somewhere along the way, “be more authentic” and “be more relatable” became the default advice for founders who aren’t getting the results they want on social media.
And while those things sound noble… they’ve quietly become the business version of telling a single woman to “just put yourself out there.”
You’re already authentic.
You’re already relatable.
That’s not the problem.
The BS Narrative
When you start believing you’re not “enough” of those things, you create an imaginary to-do list:
- Oversharing on social to prove you’re “real”
- Giving away more of your best work for free to be “valuable”
- Trying to sound like your peers so you “fit in” with the market
That’s not strategy. That’s business cosplay. And it’s going to drain you.
What It Looks Like in the Wild:
You’re posting daily but your inquiries are still, “Where did you get that candle?” instead of “Where can I buy it?”
- You get comments like “This is so pretty!”… but no one’s actually clicking “Add to Cart.”
- People treat your IG like a Pinterest board instead of a place to shop.
- Your brand story is getting engagement — but your product line isn’t getting orders.
Try This:
Instead of chasing “more relatable” content:
- Audit your last 9 posts — can a stranger tell who you’re for, why you’re different, and what you sell? If your honest answer is no, then you need to work on your unique POV.Swap one “value dump” post this week for a post that proves your expertise through story.Make your offer so obvious and well-positioned that someone could DM you today and say “I think you’re exactly what I need.” DO this by speaking to one person. Cut out the ya’ll’s and “speaking to your audience” vibes.
Founder-to-Founder Wisdom
Your audience isn’t confused because you’re not “relatable” enough.
They’re confused because you haven’t made it crystal clear why you’re the only choice.
And that clarity isn’t about being louder or more likable.
It’s about being sharper.
